
“Women in Climate Action – The Montreal Protocol & Gender Equality, exploring the essential role of women in environmental protection and climate action
May 21, 2025The workshop “Women in Climate Action – The Montreal Protocol & Gender Equality” was successfully held on May 23, 2025, at Barleti University in Tirana. This initiative was organized by National Ozone Unit (NOU), Faculty of Applied Sciences and Creative Industries, Barleti University, under the special care and support of Mr. Adriatik Dudaj, Founder and Administrator of the Barleti Group, whose commitment to education and climate awareness made this event possible.
The event brought together 24 participants — a mix of students and lecturers — primarily from the technical disciplines of Barleti University. The aim was to empower young women in technical and environmental fields by raising awareness about the Montreal Protocol, the Kigali Amendment, and the importance of gender equality in climate action.
The event opened with welcoming remarks from the Rector of Barleti University, a representative of the National Ozone Unit and a female leader from the environmental sector. They highlighted the importance of inclusive participation in environmental policy and technological fields, especially for women.
During the session: “Climate & Me”, participants shared personal insights on how climate change affects their daily lives, emphasizing women’s unique roles and vulnerabilities. This interactive session set a reflective and inclusive tone for the rest of the workshop.
The session “Montreal Protocol & Kigali Amendment – What You Need to Know” provided an overview of the Montreal Protocol and its implementation in Albania, focusing on the transition to climate-friendly refrigerants, energy efficiency, and environmental protection. Printed materials were distributed to enhance learning.
A presentation on gender mainstreaming featured examples from Albania and international experiences were discussed during the session “Why Gender Matters in Environmental Action”. It explored how inclusive approaches in technical fields can lead to more sustainable and equitable environmental solutions.
The workshop served as a meaningful platform to engage and inspire the next generation of women leaders in climate action and technical fields. It emphasized the role of the Montreal Protocol and gender-responsive strategies in addressing environmental challenges.
